Varying issues can cause computer users to not hear any sound when playing videos. Improperly configured audio hardware, corrupt or non-existent audio codecs and incorrect sound settings may cause a lack of audio when playing video.
According to Microsoft, users can troubleshoot the issue by playing multiple videos. If all the videos have no sound, users should check to see if the operating system audio is muted in the audio settings. Next, speakers or headphones can be checked to be sure that volume controls are not muted. Certain videos require special audio codecs that are not native to most operating systems. Using a special video player such as a VLC Media Player, or downloading an audio/video codec pack, allows users to properly play most audio and video files.
