Netflix does not require an adapter to play on a television; however, televisions that do not have their own Netflix applications need a media streaming device, several of which can be found on Amazon.com, Apple.com or at Best Buy. Some of the most popular devices for streaming Netflix are the Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Google Chromecast and Apple TV. Amazon.com sells the Fire TV and Roku; Best Buy sells the Roku and Chromecast; and Apple.com sells the Apple TV.
The best Netflix and media streaming device as of August 2015 was the Roku 3, according to DigitalTrends.com. Roku was one of the first media streaming devices available, and the third version includes over 2,000 channels and an excellent user interface. It also comes with an easy-to-use remote control with a headphone jack to use as an alternative to the TV's speakers.
The same review also praises the Amazon Fire TV for being speedy and featuring an excellent range of applications including Netflix and Hulu. The device can also play mobile games such as Minecraft.
DigitalTrends.com praises the Chromecast for being very affordable and simple. Unlike the other streaming devices, it does not have a user interface but instead relies on other devices such as phones and tablets to control Netflix and other apps.
Apple TV is a relatively old streaming device; however, it is nonetheless easy-to-use and a particularly good choice for users familiar with other Apple devices.
