File management is another function of an operating system. It is responsible for the organizing and tracking of directories and files that are saved or retrieved from a disk. This function also enables a user to perform various tasks, such as creating directories and files, copying and moving files, renaming files and deleting files. This system keeps track of the exact location of files on a hard drive through a specific type of file system. The two types of file systems are the New Technology File System or File Allocation table.

Since the operating system performs an array of functions, it is a mastermind. Without it, a computer cannot function.
