The FBI Moneypak virus is malware that freezes a user's computer, while claiming to be the Federal Bureau of Investigation and demanding monetary payment because the user allegedly violated laws by downloading copyright-protected files. This virus is also referred to as ransomware.
The FBI Moneypak virus renders the user's computer unusable. The computer screen displays dialogs claiming that the computer has been locked by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The virus instructs the user to purchase a Green Dot Moneypak, which is used to reload cash to Green Dot prepaid cards. It also tells the user to enter the Moneypak serial number to pay the Federal Bureau of Investigation and regain access to the locked computer. This malware program is in no way associated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and paying the fine does not restore a user's access to their computer.
