To remove a virus from your computer, restart the computer, enter Safe Mode, delete temporary files, download Malwarebytes, run a scan, and remove all infections. Removing viruses is usually easy, but severe infections may require professional assistance.

  1. Reboot the computer in safe mode

Shut down the computer. Turn the computer back on. As soon as the screen shows any activity, press the F8 key repeatedly. This brings you to the Advanced Boot Options menu. Choose Safe Mode with Networking. Press Enter.

  2. Get rid of temporary files

Go to Start, then select All Programs. Click on Accessories, System Tools and then Disk Cleanup. Run Disk Cleanup to delete the temporary files.

  3. Download Malwarebytes

Malwarebytes is a free and trusted virus and malware removal program. Search for it online, download it, and run the Setup tool. Open the program, and allow it to update.

  4. Scan the computer

Disconnect from the Internet. Run a quick scan on your computer with Malwarebytes. Usually, full scan is not necessary.

  5. Remove any infections

When the scan is complete, you see a list of potential threats. Select viruses or unwanted files, and click Remove Selected. Turn off the computer. Restart the computer, and reconnect to the Internet.
