Intel processors provide high end performance suitable for gaming, encoding and similar heavy computing. While their lower energy consumption than AMD processors, they tend to have higher prices, making AMD processors a better choice for the budget conscious.

Intel processors perform better on benchmark testing for video encoding, 3D Graphics and memory bandwidth. However, they do not always allow overclocking for performance boosting. AMD processors can consistently match Intel processors at low and medium ranges but not at high end levels even when overclocked.

AMD processors at medium and low ranges provide a great alternative to Intel processors at more affordable prices and easily allow overclocking to increase performance. However, overclocked AMD processors consume a significantly increased amount of energy and produce more heat, necessitating more efficient cooling systems.

The disadvantages of additional costs for efficient cooling include heatsinks and increased noise production due to constantly running fans. These disadvantages can outweigh the cost savings from buying and overclocking an AMD processor.

Kaveri, AMD's new processor architecture that combines the CPU and GPU on a single block, may be capable of outperforming Intel's Haswell processor architecture. However, this feature depends on software being written to take advantage of it.

Intel has more options of processors at the same price range, thereby providing more choice to the user.
