Figure skating became an Olympic sport in 1908 when it was included in the Olympic Games in London. It was also a part of the Summer Olympics in Antwerp in 1920, before moving in 1924 to its permanent spot in the Winter Olympics, held in Chamonix.

The first champion of Women's Olympic Figure Skating was Madge Syers in 1908. She also competed that year with her husband and coach, Edgar Syers, in the pair skating event, winning the bronze medal. The first gold medalist in the men's figure skating event in 1908 was Ulrich Salchow, famous for creating the Salchow jump.
