Airsoft pellets travel at high speeds and inflict painful welts and small wounds on exposed skin. They can cause permanent damage to eyes, ears and other delicate parts of the body. Metallic pellets are more dangerous than plastic pellets and are prohibited in many airsoft parks.

Protective gear is necessary when using airsoft guns. Eye protection is required, but a full face mask is recommended to protect the ears and teeth. Thick loose-fitting clothing that covers as much skin as possible, such as a hooded sweatshirt and sweat pants, can help protect the skin from injury by airsoft pellets. However, special protective outfits are available.
