Torbutrol is one of the brand names of the veterinary drug butorphanol tartrate. Torbutrol is an opiate drug that is primarily used as a cough suppressant and short-term painkiller. It is also sold under the names Stadol and Torbugesic.

As an opiate, Torbutrol is a controlled substance that requires a prescription for use. Its most common side effects include sedation, diarrhea and appetite loss. Overdose or use with other opiates can cause slowed heart rate or cardiac arrest. It may cause respiratory arrest if used with antihistamines, tranquilizers or other medications. It should always be given under supervision by a licensed veterinarian.
