Skunks live in a variety of habitats, including woodlands, open grassy areas, prairies and even residential areas. Skunks inhabit much of North America, in both rural and urban areas.

Skunks always pick a habitat within 2 miles of water and oftentimes closer. They build dens in the ground or inhabit the dens of other small animals. They also nest in hollow logs, in thick brush, in holes under buildings and underneath porches. Skunks line their dens with grass, hay or leaves. Female skunks birth their babies in their dens, usually in April or May. A skunk den may contain more than one room and have several small entrances.
