The type of dog most commonly used in Frisbee-catching competitions is the border collie. While nearly any breed can be trained to catch a flying disc, the best are those bred for herding or chasing prey.

Many retrievers, shepherds, collies and Weimaraners love Frisbees. Breeds lacking interest in the sport often don't like similar games, such as playing fetch, either. Small to medium-sized dogs tend to have more running and jumping abilities than larger dogs, though the sport is open to all sizes. The activity is a fun way to redirect a pet's excessive energy while providing some exercise for the owner.
