Miniature collie puppies, more formally known as Shetland sheepdogs, were first bred as herding dogs. They are known for being fast, agile, loyal, smart, sensitive, shy and loving. Because they are so quick and agile, miniature collie puppies are great at sports and excel at agility tasks in competition. They make great guard dogs, as they tend to bark a lot. They are very intelligent, highly trainable and very energetic.

Shetland sheepdogs are also known for being rather shy and reserved around strangers, although they love to be around their owners. They become attached to their owners to the point of following them from room to room. Because of their sheepdog heritage, they still have a strong herding instinct.

These dogs are usually best owned by singles, couples or families without small children as they are very sensitive by nature and may nip at children while trying to herd them. Because of the breed's small size, these dogs can live happily in apartments. The dog is very energetic and is great for taking out on regular walks or jogs. Regular exercise keeps these dogs at optimal weight and health.

The Shetland sheepdog's coat comes in a range of color variations. These colors include sable, black and blue merle. The breed has a long coat that requires regular grooming and brushing. Shetland sheepdogs shed excessively, especially in the spring.
