The average turtle walks at a rate of 3 to 4 miles per hour. A turtle swims at a speed of 10 to 12 miles per hour. Although turtles move slowly, they move at faster rates than the average tortoise.
Turtles are the oldest living group of reptiles. Scientists have found remains of turtles that date back to the time when dinosaurs existed. Turtles are found throughout most temperate and tropical environments in the world and protect themselves with their armor-like shell and their powerful, beaked, toothless jaws.
Turtles cannot usually survive in cold temperatures, since their body temperatures match that of the outside water and air that surrounds them. If a turtle is in a cold environment for an extended period of time, its body processes may slow down and the turtle becomes immobile.
