Poppy seeds are poisonous to dogs. All parts of the poppy plant contain opoids, and even the poppy seeds on rolls and bagels meant for human consumption are poisonous to dogs.
The severity of poisoning depends on exactly how many poppy seeds the dog eats, along with the dog's size and age. Symptoms range from constricted pupils and loss of appetite to coma. If poppy seeds are eaten, veterinarians can advise whether watchful waiting or an immediate intervention at the animal hospital is necessary. Older dogs and puppies are most likely to be at risk of the more serious side effects of eating poppy seeds.
