Wicker furniture can be refinished with either paint or stain. Refinishing wicker requires a steel brush or steel wool, sandpaper, a cloth to wipe down the furniture, an oil-based primer and either an oil-based stain or paint.

Refinish wicker furniture in a well-ventilated area and on top of a tarp or cloth. Begin by using a steel brush or steel wool to rub away all the flaking paint. Do not rub too hard and damage the fiber. Sand the rest of the piece of furniture to remove any additional paint and blend the textures. Remove the dust with a cloth. To paint the furniture, use two layers of oil-based primer and two coats of oil-based paint. To stain the furniture, rub the stain in with a cloth and then paint a clear finish over the top.
