According to Educational Portal, it takes a little less than a year to obtain a barber's license, depending on the laws and regulations of the state in which the license is issued. On average, as of 2014, most states require approximately 1,500 hours of education at a state-approved barber school.

Additionally, the student must pass a state-administered exam in most states to receive an active license. Licenses are issued for that state only and may or may not transfer to other states without the need for further education. Barbers must possess an active license issued by the state where they are performing services.
