Adult care home requirements vary from state to state, but the stipulations listed by the North Carolina Assisted Living Association are fairly typical. In terms of building requirements, the North Caroline Division of Health Service Regulation states that in addition to meeting the applicable building codes, adult care homes must also fulfill licensure rules regarding fire safety equipment, entrances, exits, water temperature, lighting, room size, service equipment and room capacity.

Annual inspection reports by the appropriate regulating authorities are also required. Regulations also have rules pertaining to licensure, administrator certification, personal care staff, volunteers, furnishings and release of records and discharge.

As for general requirements regarding workers, the North Carolina Assisted Living Association mentions that all personal care staff must be properly trained. For example, the Association states that administrator certification is required for anyone wishing to operate a home, including either a current nursing home license or 120 hours of classroom training. Personal Care staff must complete nurse aide training or an 80-hour training program. Staff must also participate in continuing education and even volunteers must be trained or licensed for the tasks they carry out. Another personnel related requirement listed by the North Carolina Assisted Living Association is criminal background checks for current and prospective employees.

Additional requirements the Association cites relate to safety aspects regarding furniture such as bed rails and casters or rollers on dining room chairs, and medication concerns such as medication administration record keeping.
