For the first few days following a tongue piercing, a liquid diet is required; in the month following a tongue piercing, soft foods, such as rice and bananas, placed directly on the molars, should be eaten. Sticky soft foods like mashed potatoes and oatmeal may be problematic, however, as they can become attached to the new jewelry.
It is important to avoid spicy, salty and acidic foods as well as anything oily or hot. Cold foods can be soothing after a tongue piercing.
It is also important to rinse the mouth after eating, no matter whatr food is eaten, in order to prevent infection. However, mouthwashes containing alcohol should be avoided for this purpose because they can cause irritation and delays in healing.
